Choose a limited, full-state or national report

Indiana State Police offers three distinct criminal-history products. The name-based Limited Criminal History (LCH) covers Indiana felony and misdemeanor arrests and depends on county reporting. The fingerprint-based Indiana Full Criminal History includes reported Indiana arrests, charges and dispositions and is mainly a personal review/challenge product. It excludes federal and out-of-state arrests. The national fingerprint product draws on reported state and federal information.

Get the requesting organization’s exact product, purpose and delivery instructions before ordering. A low-cost LCH result does not acquire national coverage, and a printout of one court case is not a repository report. If the organization asks for a court-certified disposition as well, request that document from the court that decided the case.

Prepare the LCH search and its permitted purpose

The limited search uses name, birth date, race and gender; Social Security number and birthplace can help where needed. The currently linked ISP form states that disclosing a Social Security number is voluntary. Enter accurate identifiers and any required requester information; a shared name alone cannot resolve identity.

Complete the reason-for-search category, destination for the response, daytime contact, requester name, signature and date on the form. Read its permitted-use declaration before signing. A request for another person’s information should use the actual qualifying purpose, not a convenient category selected merely to obtain a result. The form also has specific fee-exemption categories; do not assume every volunteer qualifies.

Order online or mail the limited-history request

Use Start an Online LCH Request on ISP’s limited-history page. ISP publishes a $16.32 online total, comprising a $7 state fee and $9.32 online processing fee. A mailed LCH request is $7. Save the response and transaction details; the lower mail price does not mean the online and mail routes have identical delivery timing.

For mail, send the completed form with a money order payable to the State of Indiana to Indiana State Police, Criminal History Limited Check, P.O. Box 6188, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6188. Use a money order: the current service page says it is the only mail payment, although wording in the linked older form also mentions certified checks.

The reviewed LCH service and fee pages do not publish a guaranteed mail-completion window. Plan for postal transit and ask ISP about your request if a deadline matters; retain the date mailed and a copy of the completed form. Do not buy a different check solely on the assumption that any fingerprint submission will arrive immediately.

Schedule the fingerprint product for the right agency or reason

For a national check, follow ISP’s INkless link to the authorized IdentoGO scheduling service. Choose Online Scheduling, your language, name, agency or reason, then ZIP code, location and appointment. ISP also lists 1-877-472-6917 for telephone scheduling. Verify the reason and recipient before completing enrollment and follow the identification instructions supplied for that appointment.

ISP lists credit or debit payment during scheduling and cashier’s check or money order at the fingerprint center. Its fee page still contains old fingerprint totals and an April 2020 increase footnote, so those totals are not a reliable current quote. Obtain the current total for your selected reason from the authorized scheduler before paying. The separately published $7 and $16.32 LCH fees are not fingerprint fees.

Read an inconclusive result as unfinished identification

ISP’s current labels include On File, Inconclusive Results and No Records Found. Its product guide recommends a fingerprint-based check when the name search is inconclusive. Do not convert that status into “no criminal record.” An On File result also needs an identity and disposition review rather than an assumption that every listed arrest became a conviction.

No Records Found is bounded by the Indiana-only product and information supplied by participating counties. Preserve the report date, search identifiers and type of check when providing it to a recipient. A later court order, sealed record or event outside Indiana may require a separate inquiry through the appropriate custodian.

Use the full-state review route for a disputed entry

ISP’s Challenge My Record page tells applicants to select Criminal Record Review Challenge in the fingerprint scheduler. After processing, the applicant receives a transcript or No Record Letter. To dispute an entry, email [email protected] or call 317-232-8262. Identify the error and obtain supporting documents from the court where the case was heard.

An accuracy challenge and an expungement are separate processes. ISP explains that, after a court grants an expungement or sealing, the local court forwards the verified petition and order to ISP’s Expungement Section. If the concern is that an existing order has not been reflected, keep the order and contact the court and ISP about that record rather than altering a report.
